"Ashcroft Internet Snooping Request

Title:
Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestNot satisfied with the new snooping powers granted by the PATRIOT Act, the Department of Justice is now asking the Federal Communications Commission to allow law enforcement the power to regulate the design of Internet communications services to make them easy to wiretap. If implemented, the new request by Attorney General John Ashcroft would dramatically increase the government’s surveillance powers and set a precedent for opening the entire Internet to law enforcement. What do you think of the request? -------------------------ACLU Forums Moderator, forummoderator@aclu.org

Title: Re: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestI think this is good and possibly bad. This War on terrorism is not going to be easy. If these terrorists are utilizing the internet then it is a good thing that way our gov't can track them easily and plan ahead for what may happen or nab them before they have a chance and make it easier to predict the method to their madness. Frankly Americans are so paranoid about everything when it comes to rights. Rights are a very good thing and should be protected but not at the cost of our well being as a whole. This about more than just the indivdual. We are dealing with a sporadic enemy and it won't be easy to enage an invisible enemy if you cannot utilize alternate means to track them or find them. Before someone cites that Ben Franklin line to me I've read it a million times already so spare me. If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to lose. I frankly could care less about whether Ashcroft wants to read my e-mails or whatever to friends and my fiancee. If he really wants to bore himself reading them then hey whatever. I'm all for wiping these SOB's out by any means necessary. For the paranoid liberals I say if you are that worried about it then maybe you got something to hide. But then you hide behind the cloaked veil of civl liberties/rights and violations thereof. -------------------------"You wanna fuck with me? Okay. You wanna play rough? Okay. Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestRights ARE the foundation of our well-being as a whole. They are the very limits to those "powers to protect" that keeps them from being "powers to harm." Throughout the world, and throughout history, terrorism is most often practiced by governments against their own people. A free people must have some ability to converse and assemble outside of government scrutiny. Bob

Title: Re: Ashcroft Internet Snooping Request
Earthlink had a case in court concerning the FBI use of Carnivore back in 1999. The original source of the Patriot Act was the fear of the second amendment folks.
in 2000 when Earthlink merged with Mindspring I worked for the company. When the subscribers called constantly about how slow the system was working we knew that the FBI had started some search. We joked about the slowing down of the Internet access... Bureaucrats...
Eschelon was put in place about the same time and was supposed to help the FBI listen to terrorists way before 9/11, The source of knowledge about Eschelon (spelling may be incorrect) was the conspiracy pages of the rightwing Republicans in their fight against a "liberal" Democrat's election...
Jeremy says that Hackers don't need the backdoors put in place to help the FBI or the CIA or Ashcroft. Oh yea, if you want to correspond with him just respond online and I will give you the address of Alpha-Bits. The feds did not get him, the state of Calif. did and it was under the RICO laws that Clinton and Reno created.
Yes the Patriot Act is horrid but the Dixiecrat Clinton and the Florida law and order judge Reno gave it to us previously.
Be Honest - Ashcroft is just a male reincarnation of Reno.

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestOne question that I have not been able to find an answer to is, "Did the FBI or the Justice Department ever implement any of the many recommendations contained in the IITRI Independent Evaluation of Carnivore?" As the lead technical person on that evaluation, I was appalled at the total lack of individual accountability in that system. If you read the report, you'll see that the accountability theme is repeated over and over again. That report was issued more than 3 years ago. Was there ever any follow-up? I was not allowed by my management at the time to contact Justice or FBI to follow-up. I have long since left the company, and have sent emails to my Senators and Congressman asking these same questions, but have yet to receive a reply. I would love to be called as an expert witness for the defense in trial based on the intercepts gathered by Carnivore. I could pick the lack of accountability and chain of custody apart. Now, President Bush is on the Bandwagon to make all of the so-called PATRIOT ACT permanent. He is misleading folks by stating that it is only the PATRIOT ACT that allows law enforcement to get roving wiretaps on drug lords and terrorists. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Law enforcement had those powers before the PATRIOT ACT was even enacted. What the Act did was lower the threshold for doing so. Prior to the Act, law enforcement had to show probable cause to a judge and convine him/her to issue a warrant. Now, all they need to show is that the information they MIGHT gain COULD BE related to an ongoing investigation. In other words, they need no probable cause whatsoever.I kind of wish I had never done the CARNIVORE evaluation. I have become even more cynical about Big Brother than I ever was.

Whats everybody whineing about??? The fbi isnt gonna steal your ssn and buy stereos. I pay my taxes and am honest - usually, but never did anything to go to jail. Why should I care if they read my email. I say let them. If the gov't needs to see the internet, let them. If saves only 3,000 more lives it will be worth it. If it save only 2,999 more, it will still be worth it. Get it? We're at war, so when the binladens are all dead, we can lighten up on survellance. Til then let the fbi do their job.

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestI’d appreciate it if anyone out there would go to www.surveillancestate.blogspot.com and let me know via this forum if it’s still up or accessible. It’s my blog and it’s description follows: Examination of the lost of our most basic rights, including simply to be let alone, that most Americans have taken for granted, and the efforts of one individual to reclaim his. The Patriot Act and so-called war on terrorism just legalizes what the government has been doing for years, and transforms the individual American from a citizen to government property. Title: Re: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestIt has become virtually impossible to monitor the internet. There is too many tax dollars being spent to support teh people who think lying and debating to do it efficiently enough to assure the safety of teh people. The educational systems are failing to protect the rights of their users. There isn't enough labor being done, too many people "screwing the pooch", not enough freedom of speach onthis forum. Title: An intresting concept "Snooping",How much longer must we suffer the fact we have too many dependent nations to support with too little internet access to be able to adequately communicate their interests in the way this country is administered. The Native Americans, of Indian (BIA) descent are still using dial-up access. Edited: Thursday 12, August, 2004 at 10:18 AM by OldGuy

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestAn intresting concept "Snooping", If you were to snoop on a couple during intercourse, when would it be a violation of civil rights? I believe if the snooper were to be discovered by the victoms, it would! If it were the will of the people. Would it be a violation? That's the question. I must say. This Forum has been the most difficult to participate in I have encountered. How does that benefit our couse?

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestIt appears, this forum only works on some browers. Is too protected, yet supports such protectionist programs as those use by Microsoft, AOL . How is it then the U.S. Government plans to "Wire tap" the internet. A service created by the department of defence, given to the People and now abused by marketers to make the almighty buck. When I was a Techy working for a phone company, now semi-retired and trying to post over a less than adequate dial-up internet connection. How to does this help teh members of AARP (like me) to gain access to their services?

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestIn a city just west of my location, Fargo, ND where that can lay claime to the fact thay enjoy one of the highest per capita income and a significant HUB for internet access. I have been rejected, once again, my due retirment funds, that should have been available (Fed. R. Civ P. 5(b)(2)(D) and 5(e). I am doing the best to ask the Judges, my community, medical professionals and representitives of our country to help. I'm still waiting, in fear of death myself, for justice.

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestAfter all, medical photos of sexual body parts abound on the internet to. Why not let our children see them rather than be blocked by some lame program claiming to protect them. It is the parent's responsibility to provide for their childrens sex education after all is said and done. Edited: Thursday 12, August, 2004 at 10:34 AM by OldGuy

Title: Ashcroft Internet Snooping RequestI'm back. As to my previous post concerning disposable lighters and airplanes. The manufacturer, awarded a contract using Federal funds in any way, including interest rate write downs, (See: corp. Welfare for further info.) or subcontracts to US Federal agencies like the Department of Defence. Will properly label the smoking airplanes. Make sore the air circulation devices installed on their planes are mounted in the back of the plane to assure proper ventilation. This will allow Somkers of not only cigarettes but of Medical maryjane, legal now in 6 states the opportunity to use their medications if thay are willing to take the risk of a terrorist attack. These terms and conditions are however subject to review by any Homeland security representitive or Airport staff person, upon entry. 1. To an electronic scanning device, for the purpose of detecting metalic substances, smokers exempted of course since thay are already willing to take the risk. unless thay are willing to put all reasonably accessable metalic items into a tray, exempt are items such as; metal plates, and cavity fillings like doctors put into patients from time to time. 2. All those wishing not to smoke. Are subject to cavity searches. 3. New smoking planes will not be allowed to be used by smokers addicted to tobacco unless thay are willing to quit. Smoking planes should be made in a proportion to the best guess percentage of the actuall number of smokers currently addicted to tobacco. To determine this either a Drs slip or a persons signing a release should be sufficient. People willing to pay the extra cost should be willing to smoke only cigars and areomatic pipe tobacco. The cigars should be used only after takeoff and after the no smoking sign is turned off The pipe tobabco should be used later as it leaves a more pleasent smell in the cabin as the passangers disembark. All rull rulls subject to the no smoking sign rule. The people in first class should be willing to take high priced wine based products while general admission passangers get the hard stuff next. The people in the back will just have to wait since thay will be too busy lighting up cigarettes, inhaling second hand smoke and worring about when the plane will takeoff. Medical maryjane smokers will be required to ask other passangers if thay want some to but under no circumstances should any non licensed passanger be willing to accept unless thay are willing to take the risk The ventilation systems should be able to pass the smoke out the tail pipe of the airplane so the fumes of bothe the jet fuel and the second hand smoke can reach the ozone layer before the industrial smoke does. So, what do you think?
